Bristol, England - August 19-22

We must say that Bristol surprised us. There is so much going on there.
We walked a lot and stopped by many museums and attractions. Since I procrastinated while in Bristol, I will try to squeeze as much on this one or two blog entries.
Having arrived yesterday and visited the art museum, we had three whole days to explore. We took a bus downtown and visited the tourist center. Then we walked around and explored the waterways, bridges and streets. Stopped for a lunch and had delicious tomatoe, mozzarella and spices salad. Found a small railway chugging down the docks, so took a ride.

Then went aboard “The Matthew”, a replica sailing ship from 1497 that accidentally sailed to America. We scheduled ourselves for a ride the next day.

John Cabot sailed that ship to Asia, or so he thought, but ended up in America instead. It is said that America is named after the then sheriff of Bristol, Richard Amarke, one of the trip’s major investors.

Then we stopped by the SS Great Briton. What a ship and museum about the ship and Mr. Brunel. He was involved in so many activities and was so innovative as an engineer. One must read the story.

On another note, there is a phrase ‘Ship-Shape and Bristol fashion’ from the sailing days. See the link for an explanation.

On another day, while wandering, we decided to go to a temporary carnival in town and took a ride on the oversized ferris wheel. They refer to it as ‘The Big Eye’. It is about 60 meters (200’) tall. We could see forever.
Wandered the streets and did more sightseeing. There are so many things to do in this town.
Lest I forget, the Aquarium. It was very nice with emphasis on keeping the plastics and garbage out of the sea. The descriptions were awesome and there a lot of space and sampling of plant species.

Did your you know there are Money Spiders? Well, there are. Superstition has it that if Money Spider was to walk across you, it was going to spin you some new clothes and this, in turn, would mean financial good fortune!

Now for some photos. Will probably continue the photos on another blog entry.

No matter how many of these monuments I see, my heart breaks every time. So many young lives lost or damaged beyond repair in the two wars.
I selfishly thank God all those horrors didn't touch our land. At least not directly.
On a more frivolous note, I must say that was my last day of wearing pretty sandals to go with my pretty dresses. My feet are killing me! From now on it is sneakers. I look like crap, but I don't care.
😁😁
