Adventures in traveling - Madrid to Foss Quay, UK

It was time to leave Madrid and the wonderful hospitality of Fernanda. We had scheduled a ride on a train from Madrid to Santander, then the Brittany Ferry from Santander to Plymouth, UK.
Well, let the the adventure begin!
Fernanda gave us a ride to the Atocha train station in Madrid. We found our way to the correct train and got on (don’t forget, we have two large suitcases and the mobility scooter and two heavy backpacks). Train was to be no changes. Well the train started up a bit late and then it was decided that it wasn’t working right, so at the first stop, we had to change trains. Did that and along the way I got a message from the ferry company that they were delayed. Well, the original time was 8:30 pm and they were delayed about four hours. Our train was due into Santander at 6:15pm.
Then got another message from the ferry company that it was delayed an additional hour. This meant that it would leave around 1am. Since this is a 22 hour trip, we would arrive in Plymouth around 10pm on the 15th. That wouldn’t normally be too bad, except the AirBnB I had was a ways from Plymouth in the middle of nowhere and after we landed in Plymouth, we had to catch a taxi to another ferry, then another taxi.
When we got off the ferry in Plymouth, there was a fireworks competition. It was awesome, but made taxis a little scarce. To make matters worse, we got there just as they were ending. Some folks were calling cab companies and were being told that it could be up to two hours because of the celebrations. Well, we lucked out. One of those old style London cabbies pulled up and we grabbed it.

As we left the pier, the driver told us that the Cremyll ferry had closed for the night and we would have to use the Torpoint ferry which is much further. We asked him if he could take us to where we were going and he said if there wasn’t too much delay at the ferry, he could do that. Well, thank goodness there was no line at the ferry and he drove on. It was a 10 minute ferry ride and upon leaving the ferry we headed toward where we would stay. Oh My Goodness, what a ride. Wish it would have been daylight.
Anyway, since he was unsure of where we were going, we got close and he started knocking on doors to ask. We were on the right road, but hadn't gone far enough yet because it looked like there was no road. We decided to go down that “no road” that was dirt and full of potholes and, lo and behold, there was the cottage.
Abi had left the door unlocked, so we unloaded and found the bedroom and went to bed. Thank goodness for the perseverance of the taxi driver. Without him I don’t think we would ever have arrived. It was now 1am, and the previous night we had retired at 2am, so we were very tired.
